Lessons to Take Into 2021: Five Ideas For A More Successful New Year

2020 has been “interesting” to say the least, with ups and downs for all of us.  There are lessons to tak into 2021 that can have lasting effects for years to come.  But that doesn’t have to be completely negative.  Today there are opportunities that didn’t exist when we approached 2020, and potential within ourselves that we haven’t fully met.

Lessons to Take into 2021

There have been many lessons given to us this year.  Here are five that may make 2021 a happier New Year.

Try these…

  1. First, stay flexible.  A military commander once said that “Every plan is a good one…until the first shot is fired.”  2020 taught us that nobody knows what the future holds, but success often comes from being able to adapt quickly.
  2. Second, Collaboration: we never knew how much we needed to work together, until it was so much harder to do it.  Whether it’s inside your organization, outside, or virtual, there are benefits to collaborating to gain insights and find new opportunities.    Where will you find your next opportunity to collaborate?
  3. Third, Communication is a challenge worth pursuing: with “Remote” working: we’ve had to find new ways to communicate.  It could be Zoom, or it could be a hand written note.  What’s worked for you?  What will you try in 2021?  It’s the small details that can really make a difference.
  4. Fourth, Try new things: adaptability.  When you’re blindsided by a pandemic, you have no choice but to adapt and make the most of it.  To get started, try something small. Then something else.  Eventually they’ll all start to add up.
  5. And finally, your customers are more valuable than ever.  Think about their needs today and in the future, and think about their expectations.  Work harder to keep they loyal and find new ways to help them and reinforce your message to them.

Look back to look forward

What have you learned in 2020?  This may be a good time to stop and think about what you’ve done, what you didn’t do because it might not have been the right time, and what new ideas you can try to pursue opportunities
