These days we’ve all heard them: Robot Phone Greetings.  Is that any way to greet telephone callers?  Is that how businesses want to win new customers?  Is that how you greet your callers?  There’s a better way.

Don’t get me wrong: Robots have their place.  They’re really good at some stuff:

  • they can vacuum your floor
  • they can make things like circuit boards or candy bars
  • they can do jobs that are too dangerous for humans, like going to Mars

But do Robots make you feel welcome?  Relaxed?  Like a valued customer?  Not really.

That weird distorted voice

Many phone VoIP systems offer the option for “text to voice.”  You simply type in the greeting that you want, and the robot voice records it for you…in a weird distorted voice.

But think about your callers: who are they?  The important ones are your customers, or your future customers.  Your challenge is to impress them, show them that they’ve called the right place, and that you’re their best choice to help them.

Does a robotic voice answering make you feel good about the company you’re calling?  So how do your callers feel?
