We’ve all heard the phrase a thousand time, usually when we call a huge faceless organization: The IRS…the DMV…the Cable Company. If there was any doubt in our minds about how important our call really was to them, its confirmed when we hear the recorded voice the recorded voice tell us this for the 20th time after 10 minutes of waiting.

We all know that sometimes we have to wait. Patience is part of growing up. But some companies push you to the limit. They sometimes even provide an explanation for why you have to wait: “We are experiencing heavier than usual call volume…” Is it surprising that you hear this same explanation every time you call.
Tell a lie and people expect lies.
We all know liars. Some are friends. Some are business associates. We have enough experience with them that we know not to trust them, no matter what they say. Even is it’s true!
Have you ever heard the joke: “How do you know when a politician is lying?” (His lips are moving!) Once you earn a reputation as a liar, you’re “branded.” Businesses can be branded just as easily. Once you start lying to your customers they expect it, no matter what you say. So what can you do?
Don’t start. Don’t say “Your Call is very important to us”
Is there a better choice? Yes. Customers know that they may have to wait on hold. Instead of lying to them (and ruining your reputation) why not give them information that they want, and that you want them to have? Tell them about the unique qualities of your products and services. Tell them about quality. Tell them about improvements that they’ll appreciate and value. Talk about what’s most important to them, and how you can solve their problems or make their dreams come true.
